Ohio School Facilities Commission Evaluates NCH Schools

FUNDING OFFERED TO NCH SCHOOL DISTRICT BY STATE

In the fall of 2000, OSFC (Ohio School Facilities Commission) evaluated North College Hill School District facilities.  In 2004 a District Facilities Assessment Committee was formed to analyze the school facility needs of our district and make recommendations to the Board.  In the spring of 2006 three community meetings were held to receive feedback on the proposed grade configuration and locations of the buildings.  Design proposals were received and an architect was selected for the building project.  The cost of the project is approximately $38,500,000.  The state share will be 63% of the cost of the project.  The local share will be about $14,500,000.

"TURNING THE DIRT"

NCH students, staff, residents and alumni gathered Friday evening, 9/12/08, for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the new schools.  Charles Ashing, Class of 1954 and NCH Alumni President, welcomed guests, followed by the Presentation of the Colors and the Pledge of Allgiance by Boy Scout Troop 150.  The National Anthem was played by the NCH High School band and accompanied by the NCH High School Choir.  Following the presentation of "My Life Is in Your Hands" sung by the choir, Superintendent Gary Gellert, NCH Mayor Dan Brooks, and Board of Education President Carolyn Jones spoke briefly.  Essays were written and read by Azavieria Payne, Goodman grade 3; Sawyer Whalen, Clovernook grade 5; Demetrius Williams, Becker grade 6; Jerry Ector, Jr. High grade 8; Emily Krebs, High School grade 10; and John Brandon, High School grade 12.  Board and community members, administrators, students and staff took part in the traditional "turning of the dirt".  The program concluded with singing of the Alma Mater, the Fight Song, and closing remarks by Charles Ashing.

Building New Schools!

BUILDING OUR FUTURE FROM THE GROUND UP

Early site work for the elementary school began in late October with site work scheduled for the middle-high school in January.   The single story portion of the high school will be demolished in January.  The programs housed in that portion of the building will be relocated to the two-story portion of the junior-senior high school.

Construction Progresses

WORK CONTINUES DESPITE COLD WEATHER

Despite extremely cold temperatures, work at the construction site continues.  Mountains of dirt appeared as fields were leveled for construction.  Temporary fences, heavy equipment, "Keep Out" signs, and mounds of dust and dirt mark this as a very busy construction area.

Work Continues

NEITHER SNOW, NOR RAIN, NOR HEAT, NOR GLOOM OF NIGHT....

The new schools building project is on schedule and on budget.  For the elementary school, the mass grading, erosion control and east storm system are 100% complete, and the building pad has been finish-graded.  For the middle/high school stadium storm, electrical CY, internal remodeling and Phase I prep is 100% complete.

The fine arts wing of the high school was demolished in February.
Demolition Begins on Single Story Portion of High School

... AND THE WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN

The demolition of the single story of the high school between the gymnasium and the auditorium is nearing completion.  Care is being taken to recycle most of the materials.  Our project is following the LEED guidelines and we are on track to be certified GOLD.  The new middle school and high school will be built in this area.  The Board reviewed and approved the construction documents at the meeting February 12.  Bids for the construction will be advertised and opened on March 12.  Above ground construction will begin at the end of April.

Suspense Builds As Construction Work Continues

HEY! WHAT'S GOING ON OVER THERE?

Digging continues, ground is moved, men and large equipment work daily, while by-standers search for progress.  It still looks like a large, flat, muddy, barren piece of land where nothing has actually been accomplished.  But underneath that piece of ground lies the foundation of what is to come.
